Georgia seeks public input on protected species list for first update in 20 years

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Georgia wildlife officials are asking for the public’s help as the state undertakes its first comprehensive update to its protected species list in two decades.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is accepting nominations throughout June for native plants and animals that should be added, removed or reclassified on the state’s protected species list.
Last updated in 2006, the list includes species protected under the Georgia Endangered Wildlife Act and Georgia Wildflower Preservation Act. The list features some of the state’s most vulnerable species, including gopher tortoises, saltmarsh sparrows, monarch butterflies and pink lady’s-slipper orchids.
According to DNR, the proposed revisions were developed using Georgia’s 2025 State Wildlife Action Plan and include possible additions and removals, updated species names and changes that align with federal conservation listings.
Officials say public input is an important part of the process.
“DNR biologists and species experts from across the Southeast helped develop the draft revised protected species list by reviewing the best available information on the status and trends for Georgia species,” said Katrina Morris, a program manager with DNR’s Wildlife Resources Division. “Giving the public an opportunity to review this list and provide input on things we may have missed will help ensure that we provide protected status for the species that are in the greatest need of conservation in our state.”
Residents can submit nominations through June 30. After that, DNR will review submissions, revise the draft list as needed and release an updated version for public comment before sending final recommendations to the Georgia Board of Natural Resources for approval.
Officials encourage anyone submitting nominations to review the proposed updates and species profiles before making recommendations.
