CAT’s paratransit division introduces new director with responses to rider concerns

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Chatham Area Transit is responding to critiques of its paratransit division with new leadership and operational changes, including a new call system, updated driver standards and rider app.
New director sets priorities
Paratransit Director Andrea Wiggins said her top priorities in the new position are safety and reliability. Chief Operations Officer Dr. Emmanuel Twumasi said the division is focused on transparent responses to rider concerns.
“We want to engage with the public,” Twumasi said. “The only way we can make the system better is if we can hear your side of the story.”
Wiggins highlighted a new call system and higher standards for drivers, including new rules to help them stay engaged.
“All of this is to improve the overall rider experience,” Wiggins said.
Riders respond to new leadership
CAT board member and paratransit rider John Taylor said he has observed Wiggins address problems directly since she took the position.
“She doesn’t just make a decision,” Taylor said. “She makes sure that not only me but the passengers are okay with it.”
Tiffany Daniel, who has used paratransit for 24 years, said Wiggins’ success depends on understanding the problems riders experience firsthand.
“Cause you’re sitting behind a desk and you don’t know what it’s like to have a two hour wait when you’re at work, get off work at 5 o’clock and you’re still waiting for the bus at 7:30, you’re tired and you want to go home,” Daniel said. “You all have cars, you can get up and go when you feel like it, my life — and this is what I tell people — is run by Chatham Area Transit.”
Daniel said she remains cautious about the new direction.
“I’m optimistic,” Daniel said. “So don’t let me down.”
