Beaufort’s Waterfront Park promenade restoration moves into next phase

by Jude Binkley

BEAUFORT, S.C. — The City of Beaufort is moving into the next phase of restoring the promenade at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, issuing a request for quotation (RFQ) to find a team of design consultants.

The promenade area closed approximately one year ago due to issues with its structural support system.

Rebuild plans include flood mitigation

After reviewing options and public feedback, the city decided to rebuild the promenade. Plans call for replacing the structural support system and raising the promenade to minimize flooding risks.

Plans for the future of Beaufort's Waterfront Park promenade

Beaufort Assistant City Manager Eric Claussen said the park holds significant importance for the community and its economy.

“This is the crown jewel of our community. It means so much to us,” Claussen said. “Statistically, about 85% of every visitor that comes to Beaufort visits the waterfront park. It’s an important economic driver for the community. So it’s really important that we get that back up and operational.”

Timeline spans 12 to 18 months

The next design phase of the project is expected to take 12 to 18 months. That work includes developing engineering and landscaping plans and pursuing grant opportunities to fund construction.

More information on the project and its timeline are available on the City of Beaufort’s Preserving the Promenade website.
