Windsor Forest Community Center one step closer to breaking ground

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The long-awaited Windsor Forest Community Center is one step closer to breaking ground on Savannah’s south side.

Wednesday, the Windsor Forest community got a first look at plans for the new community center being built on Windsor Road.

It’s a project that has been in the works for nearly a decade, and a project that Savannah Alderman Kurtis Purtee has been pushing for since he was voted into office.

Now with plans in place and a tentative timeline, a community center is on its way to the south side.

“It’s really exciting and really fulfilling and humbling that the community can come together and we were finally able to agree on the location the design and what we can put inside this building,” said Purtee.

A sigh of relief as the public got a look at plans for the Windsor Forest Community Center.

It’s a project that community members like Rose McGuire have been waiting and hoping for for years.

“Retirees want, people need places to go, we want to socialize, we don’t want to stay at home,” she said. “I’m glad its finally here.”

For years there was back and forth between the city and residents of the district about a location and center amenities.

The city of Savannah has now settled on the plot of land formerly known as Woody’s Skate Park.

The $9,000,000 investment will include a full basketball court, a fitness room, locker rooms, concessions and all purpose rooms for youth and senior activities.

Wednesday’s town hall was just to update the community on the project.

Savannah City Council will need to approve plans before they can move forward.

But as it stands now, the city hopes to break ground on this project in 2026.
