What we know about the fatal Middleground Rd. shooting
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One woman has died and a suspect is in custody after a shooting Wednesday morning on the south side of Savannah, Savannah Police Department officials confirm.
The shooting occurred at about 11 a.m. at the Marathon gas station connected to Chu’s Convenience Mart at Middleground Road and Mohawk Street. Officers on the scene told WTOC that a woman was taken to the hospital.
Savannah Police later informed WTOC that the woman who was shot died and the case is now being investigated as a homicide.
Police say a male suspect shot the woman and then fled in a vehicle south on Mohawk Street. After traveling about half a mile, the suspect jumped out of the car, and the vehicle later ended up in Mohawk Lake. The suspect was taken into custody and the weapon was recovered, authorities said.
Pulaski Elementary was placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes because of the nearby incident at the Marathon gas station.
Savannah Police said investigators do not yet know whether the people involved were connected or whether the shooting was a random act. Officials added there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Savannah Police Department is investigating. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the department.
