ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - Newly released footage shows the moments leading up to a crash that killed a South Carolina state trooper earlier this year.
WIS obtained the dashcam video of the Aug. 10 wreck that killed Trooper Dennis Ricks in Orangeburg County via a Freedom of Information Act request with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
The video shows Ricks performing a traffic stop on Interstate 26 eastbound at 2 a.m. on a white Nissan Altima that was driving along the outer lines of the interstate. Ricks is then seen getting out of his vehicle with his reflective vest on and approaching the driver.
In the video, Ricks is seen standing on the shoulder of the interstate before he introduced himself and explained why he pulled the vehicle over. Ricks said the driver was crossing over the lane markings and that not only did Ricks see him do it someone had called about it as well.
The driver then admitted to watching a TV show while driving. The footage shows that less than a minute after he got out of his vehicle, Ricks was hit by a box truck that appeared to drive over the outer line of the interstate. According to the investigative report, the box truck first hits Trooper Ricks’ patrol car before hitting him and the driver of the white Altima.
The truck later stops further up the road, still in view of Ricks’s dashcam.

The driver of the vehicle that was pulled over then got out of their car and ran up the road. When a passenger also exits, someone saying, “call 911″ is heard.
The alleged driver of the box truck, 45-year-old Anthony Aydlette, is later heard on the phone with 911 claiming Ricks was “standing in the road” and that he “tried to swerve over.”
At around 2:10 a.m., the first responding trooper arrives at the scene, rushing to Ricks. Shortly after, Aydlette is again heard saying he tried to swerve out of the way.
The trooper later mentions he has a pulse and is telling Ricks not to move multiple times.
Aydlette and the driver who was initially pulled are then seen flagging down a fire rescue vehicle as it first arrived at the scene at 2:19 a.m. The video also shows an ambulance arriving at the scene just around six minutes later.
According to the investigative report, a medical helicopter was requested to transport Trooper Ricks to a hospital in North Charleston, but weather prevented the chopper from flying. Instead, Ricks was taken by ambulance. He died three days after the crash.
The alleged driver of the box truck, 45-year-old Anthony Aydlette, was later charged with reckless homicide as well as driving under suspension. He was granted a $225,000 surety bond in late August. Records show he remains jailed in Orangeburg County as of Oct. 13 and has not yet posted bond.

WIS is in the process of reviewing over two hours of footage provided by SCDPS from both the crash and its immediate aftermath.
