United Way of the Coastal Empire welcomes new board leadership

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The United Way of the Coastal Empire is welcoming new leadership, introducing its latest board of directors who help guide the organization’s mission to improve lives across the region.

WTOC spoke with Cecilia Russo Turner, the newly appointed chair of United Way’s board of directors, to learn more about what’s ahead for the organization and how it’s working to meet community needs.

Right now, United Way is in the middle of its 2026 Community Fund campaign. The Community Fund supports non-profit organizations, direct services and volunteer efforts that aim to improve lives in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty and Long Counties.

“This is money that stays in the community, going directly to organizations that are vetted,” Russo Turner said. “There are a little over 50 different nonprofit organizations and over 80 programs this money is going to.”

The fund also supports United Way’s 211 hotline that connects residents to immediate assistance.

Between July 2024 and June 2025, the 211 line answered 8,645 calls for help. The top needs included housing, utilities and food.

“The money that you give goes directly to those who need it,” Russo Turner said. “Those who may need help with cars, child care, food or shelter - they dial 211, someone speaks to them, and we figure out how to best help them through resources we get from the Community Fund.”

Looking ahead, United Way of the Coastal Empire is also preparing for its annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving.
