Suspect sought after Helms College student found dead in parking lot

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Helms College student was found dead in the college’s parking lot on Monday night, according to authorities.

Now, a suspect is being sought in his death.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says 30-year-old Martin Louis Gordon, of Grovetown, was found unresponsive in Helms College’s parking lot around 11:09 p.m.

Deputies say they responded to the parking lot for reports of a deceased man.

Deputies say they initially thought the incident was traffic-related, but later learned Gordon was possibly stabbed at least once.

Gordon died due to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:35 p.m. by the Richmond County Coroner’s Office, according to officials.

The coroner’s office says an autopsy has been scheduled.

“We are heartbroken by this tragedy. Law enforcement is leading the investigation, and we are cooperating fully. Out of respect to the student’s family, we will not share further details at this time. Our focus right now is supporting our students, faculty and staff. Counseling and emotional support services are available to anyone who needs them,” said Helms College in a statement.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the campus community, spreading concern among students, family members, friends and others who didn’t know Gordon personally.

Students on campus expressed shock, sadness and worry about the deadly stabbing.

But soon after, we were told that students and staff were not allowed to talk to us.

Helms College offers night classes designed for adult learners. According to the college’s campus safety and security survey, violent crime is uncommon on campus. From 2022 to 2024, there were no murders reported on campus and only one aggravated assault in 2024.

Despite the college’s historically low crime statistics, students and community members remain worried while waiting for the suspect to be apprehended.

Deputies say they are looking for a subject in connection with Gordon’s death.

The subject was last seen on foot going towards Washington Road.

Deputies say the subject is to be considered armed and dangerous.
