Statesboro teen raises funds for Walk to End Alzheimer’s

STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - More than 100 people are registered to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s starting at 9 a.m. Saturday in Mill Creek Park.

Among the participants will be 16-year-old Ava Mincey, who has raised about $40,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association through lemonade sales over the past five years.

Mincey began her fundraising efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic after losing her great grandmother to Alzheimer’s.

“I had a personal loss with my great grandmother from Alzheimer’s and so at the age of 10 I was like - well I started volunteering with my church youth group - and at the age of 10 I was like I want to do something other than just sit home during Covid and I want to do something else to help this cause since I couldn’t go to the nursing home and do other stuff,” Mincey said.

The Statesboro walk is part of the world’s largest fundraiser to fight Alzheimer’s. The local fundraising effort has already surpassed its goal. As of Friday November 11th, the Statesboro Walk to End Alzheimer’s has raised $37,176. Their goal was $35,000.

You can donate after walk as well.
