Patriot Day 5K draws over 1,000 in Savannah, marks 25 years since Sept. 11 attacks

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - More than 1,000 people participated in the Patriot Day 5K in Savannah Thursday morning to honor the victims and first responders of September 11.

Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield and the City of Savannah partnered to host the event at Forsyth Park.

Organizers said about 1,300 military members and civilians participated. The event commemorated 25 years since the attacks.

The course passed through seven historic squares and included an aerial display.

Participant reflects on anniversary

“I was a sophomore in high school when the attacks on the Twin Towers and in D.C. occurred. It further strengthened my belief in the need to serve the country, just like so many other service members,” said Garrison Commander for Hunter Army Airfield Lieutenant Colonel Kyle Stilwell. “And so, 25 years later, to see that nobody has forgotten and that we still come together as a community to remember our first responders — all the fallen — this is a pretty significant event, and we’re humbled to be able to do it with the city of Savannah.”

The event ended with a concert by the Third Infantry Division Band.

Each participant received a commemorative medal featuring the number 25.
