Soldiers who subdued Fort Stewart shooter awarded medals, 3 injured soldiers released from hospital

FORT STEWART, Ga. (WTOC) - The Secretary of the Army, Hon. Dan Driscoll, has honored six soldiers with awards for subduing the Fort Stewart shooter on August 6.

The six soldiers awarded were:

  • First Sgt. Joshua Arnold
  • Master Sgt. Justin Thomas
  • Staff Sgt. Melissa Taylor
  • Staff Sgt. Robert Pacheco
  • Sergeant Aaron Turner
  • Sergeant Eve Rodarte

WTOC was live at Fort Stewart where a press conference was held to give an update after Wednesday’s shooting that left five soldiers injured.

During the incident on Wednesday, Sgt. Aaron Turner and Master Sgt. Justin Thomas restrained the suspect, Sgt. Quornelius Radford, while the other soldiers tended to the soldiers that were shot.

Of the five soldiers that were injured, three of them were released from the hospital on Wednesday.

One of the soldiers remains at Winn Army Community Hospital. The soldier is doing well and is expected to recover. Another soldier remains at Memorial Health University Medical Center and has a longer road to recovery.

The suspect is in custody and will likely be transferred to a military facility in the near future.
