King Tides a concern this weekend into next week

by Jamie Ertle

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A King Tide is a non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally high tides. Higher than normal tides typically occur during a new or full moon and when the moon is at it’s perigee. Perigee is the point when, in this instance, the moon will be the closest to earth in it’s elliptical orbit.

Lunar perigee is coming up 10/28 with the next full moon 10/26. The highest tides for all of 2026 will be next Tuesday and Wednesday.

And to add to the the high tides, we’ll have a strong onshore flow from a Coastal Low forming off our coast this weekend.

The morning high tides this weekend are of concern for coastal flooding and road inundation. Saturday 7am...9.8ft, Sunday 8am...10.1ft. At around 10ft Hwy 80 may be completely covered.

Monday through Wednesday morning high tides may make some roads including Hwy 80 impassable as well.
