Several livestock exposed after cow tests positive for rabies in Anderson Co.

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - A cow tested positive for rabies in Anderson County, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Health.

The department said a the cow that tested positive was found near Gentry Road and Highway 81 S. in Starr.

While no people have been exposed, 19 cows were expose and will be quarantined as prescribed by the public health veterinarian, the department said.

The cow was tested for rabies on Dec. 31, 2025, and was confirmed to have rabies on Jan. 2.

If you your family members, or your pets have come in contact with the rabid cow or another animal that may have rabies, the department asks you call DPH’s Anderson office at (864) 372-3270 during normal business hours (8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday) or after hours and on holidays at (888) 847-0902 (Select Option 2).
