Savannah tech company expands fiber infrastructure to Atlanta ahead of World Cup
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Savannah-based tech company is playing a key role in Atlanta’s World Cup preparations by joining a new alliance to expand secure fiber services across Georgia.
Seimitsu, a technology and cybersecurity company, is forming SouthernWaves along with Southern Telecom. The collaboration is aimed at bringing high-speed internet to communities across Georgia, with network monitoring based in Savannah.
“We are lighting the secure, protected fiber that the power company has been putting in the ground for years,” Seimitsu COO Keith Fletcher said. “So now we can carry large bandwidth from other carriers and enterprises from here in Savannah, out to Atlanta or Jacksonville to provide more reliable and secure service.”
Fletcher said one of the major projects is in South Downtown Atlanta, where new fiber infrastructure will serve 59 buildings across a dozen blocks - ready in time for when the city hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“We’re needing to make sure that their public area Wi-Fi, and their stores and restaurants are ready to go with that,” Fletcher said. “On top of that, the City of Atlanta is going to need a lot of support for the million or more extra people...That’s where Southern Company has always been there for Atlanta, and we are looking at working with them and the city.”
With connections monitored from Savannah, Fletcher said the alliance helps position the Hostess City as a growing tech up.
“By having state-of-the-art, secure, reliable internet access, Savannah can attract even more businesses,” Fletcher said.
