Savannah State journalism program reaccredited, praised for leadership and engagement
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah State University is celebrating a major academic milestone.
The university’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communications has earned reaccreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, a national organization that evaluates media programs across the country.
The decision was finalized during a May 5 meeting in Washington, D.C., following a yearlong review process that included a self-study, campus visit, and evaluation of the program’s performance.
Leaders say the reaccreditation confirms the program’s strong curriculum and hands-on training, with reviewers praising its leadership, student engagement, and full compliance with all standards.
Students gain real-world experience through media labs, internships, and partnerships, with a strong track record of graduates securing jobs in the industry.
Savannah State’s program has been accredited since 2007 and remains one of only a few in Georgia to hold this distinction. It is also the only historically Black college or university in the state with this accreditation.
University leaders say the recognition reflects a continued commitment to preparing students with the skills and experience needed to succeed in today’s evolving media landscape.
