Savannah State University prepares for homecoming week festivities
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Homecoming festivities are underway at Savannah State University this week, and campus police are stepping up their safety efforts.
Savannah State Police Chief Meshia Thomas said homecoming is a time to celebrate, reflect, and create new memories — but it’s also a time to stay alert.
“Homecoming at Savannah State University is an exciting time,” Thomas said.
With so many people coming to Savannah to celebrate, Thomas says it’s also a time to be vigilant and prioritize safety. She says last year’s homecoming was incident-free, but with large crowds and multiple events on campus, the risk always exists.
Enhanced security measures implemented
In light of recent violence at other college campuses across the country, Thomas says Savannah State is even more focused on keeping everyone safe.
“Here at Savannah State, the security measures and protocols we’re implementing are designed to support our students, staff, faculty, and guests here on campus,” Thomas said.
Some of those safety measures include an increased police presence throughout the week and closer coordination with university housing to prevent unauthorized visitors.
Officers are also reviewing campus-wide security, enforcing the clear bag policy, and ensuring all metal detectors are working properly.
Thomas says the department is also working with campus utilities to make sure lighting is fully functional — helping improve visibility at night.
ID required for campus entry
Guests must show a valid ID to enter campus, and Thomas reminds everyone that safety starts with individual responsibility.
“Following the protocols! Making sure that you show up, follow the rules and expectations, and govern yourselves as good stewards,” Thomas said. “When you see something, say something. If you notice something that doesn’t look right, communicate with campus police or local police so we can address it immediately.”
