Savannah Children’s Theatre looking to call Star Castle home
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Savannah Children’s Theatre has been in search of a new home for months, after its roof collapsed during the southeast’s winter snowstorm.
“It caved in,” explained The Savannah Children Theatre’s Director of Education, Kendra Norwood Brown. “It actually caused great damage to our stage in areas in the theatre. Thousands and thousands of costumes were damaged.”
The Savannah Children’s Theatre has been searching for a new home for the last 9 months. Without a place to call home, they’ve been using different community venues like the JEA, Savannah State, and more. With Savannah’s legacy skating rink Star Castle closing last month, the organization is now working to secure it as a new home.
“Star Castle kind of fell in our laps,” Brown said.
In order to make that happen, The Savannah Children’s Theatre need to come up with $500,000 dollars by October 1st. So far, they’ve met $140,000 dollars of that goal thanks to community support.
On September 20th, The Savannah Children’s Theatre is hosting its yearly gala, and hopes with the combination of community support and that event, they’ll have enough to realize this dream of saving The Savannah Children’s Theatre and giving Star Castle new life.
“For 22 years, we’ve been a part of this community. And for 22 years, we’ve, we have been given the best gift. And that is to inspire, educate and entertain through live performances in theater,” Brown said.
To Brown, it’s about keeping the joy of theatre in Savannah alive for generations to come.
“It’s hope. It’s love. It’s light. It is seeing the faces of so many just light up.”
