Santa brings bags of toys to children at Memorial Health Children’s Hospital

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Little boys and girls spending the holidays in the hospital got an early visit from Santa Claus when Atlanta Gas Light delivered bags and bags of toys to Memorial Health Children’s Hospital.

Thursday’s visit, the tenth year in a row for the event, brought smiles, laughter and a welcome dose of holiday magic to patients and their families.

Children had the chance to sit on Santa’s lap and pick a special gift from his sack, while volunteers and hospital staff helped make the celebration run smoothly.

“The best part is really the presents,” said Ares, a patient at the hospital.

For Atlanta Gas Light, the annual toy drive has become an important tradition. Dean Marianos, vice president of operations at Atlanta Gas Light, said the company treasures the opportunity to support the hospital and its patients.

“For us to be able to support this hospital, these kids as they’re going through treatment here, it’s something that I cherish every year,” Marianos said.

Organizers say the event continues to grow. Travis Boykin, senior safety specialist for Atlanta Gas Light, estimated the group brought between three and four thousand toys to the hospital this year.

Heather Newsome, administrator of Memorial Health Children’s Hospital, said the visit helps brighten a difficult time for both children and their families.

“We’re going to have kids that are here during the holiday. And so any way that we can brighten their day, it really goes a long way, not just with the kid, but also with the family. It makes such a big impact,” Newsome said.

Parents echoed that sentiment.

Ares’ mother described the afternoon as “an amazing experience,” adding that after battling leukemia, her son enjoyed a rare, joyful moment.

“It’s so nice because, I mean, he’s in the hospital, he’s been battling leukemia, and it’s just fun. It’s an amazing experience,” she said.

Before leaving, one young patient said that his Christmas wish was already coming true.

“And guess what, I’m kicking this leukemia’s butt,” Ares said.

Atlanta Gas Light and Memorial Health say they plan to continue the tradition next year.
