SCCPSS unveils multi-million dollar renovations at the Early Learning Center at Henderson E. Formey School
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham County Public School leaders said the renovations inside and outside include increased security measures and a slide in the gym cost $14 million in total.
At Wednesday’s ribbon cutting ceremony, leadership said students and teachers are ignited and passionate, ready to embark on a journey with premier education.
“It makes an astronomical impact,” said Principal Erica Swindell-Foster.
Construction started in 2014, but the building itself has stood since the late 1980s.
They honored the late Henderson E. Formey for his dedication and service to education in our community.
“He is a man that has a foundation in education and family, and they are the most important things, and that’s one of the things we build upon here,” said Swindell-Foster.
Sylvester Formey said at the podium that H.E. would have told him that it’s all about the young people, that he pushed for early learning and that the kids have to learn in a positive environment.
SCCPSS Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts said his impact and vision are profound in this community. And having a building like this now, is a strong start for the students’ education long term.
“We know that when our students get a great early start, they tend to move on in their educational careers with much more success,” she said. “And so, making sure that that start is strong and that the classrooms and the environment is great is so important and it’s going to pay dividends into the future.”
