SCCPSS leaders work to shorten amount of time students are on buses
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham County School leaders are figuring out ways to shorten the amount of time students are on the bus.
It’s all a part of their long-range facilities plan passed last year.
WTOC sat in on the school board’s meeting Wednesday.
If approved, the full plan presented could impact about 300 students.
It addresses a few different concerns.
The main one being transportation and how it relates to overcrowding.
Megan Davidson, the Chief Operating Officer of Operations and Facilities for the school system presented a few things that could help.
She gave board members a look at Hubert Middle School and Myers Middle School, which they consider underutilized schools.
She proposed they move 46 students from Hubert Middle School to Myers Middle School.
This will prevent overcrowding and allow for bus routes be shorter.
“Our request is to realign these students to go from Juliet Lowe up through Myers and then to Johnson. So, it would impact 46 students which would save 20 minutes on the bus and allow us to eliminate a route which is a double back route. That means that the driver takes those students, goes back and picks up another group and takes it,” said Davidson.
She said that this was only up for discussion Wednesday, but she hopes it will be approved and go into effect for the 2026-2027 academic year.
