Over 50 animals rescued from ‘nightmare’ home in Statesboro
STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - More than 50 animals were rescued from a Statesboro home Tuesday in what officials are calling a nightmare situation.
[UPDATE 4:21 p.m. 10/14/2025] The Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office has revealed the identities and mugshots of the two people arrested after today’s rescue of over 50 dogs and cats from a single home in Statesboro.
According to a social media post from the Sheriff’s Office, 70-year-old Debra Jo Green and 71-year-old Kenneth Mark Berrin have been arrested and are facing felony criminal charges of Cruelty to Animals.

The number of charges has not yet been determined.
Green and Berrin are being held in the Bulloch County Jail.
[ORIGINAL STORY] “The conditions in this residence are very deplorable. Every room in the house is just scattered and spread with dog feces and urine. The ammonia smell is just outrageous. The complaint came from different folks in the community,” said Bulloch Co. Sheriff’s Office, Capt. Todd Hutchens.
Deputies arrested two people on animal cruelty charges following the early morning operation on October 14, 2025, after the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant.
The suspects were taken to the Bulloch County Jail.

Agencies remained on scene throughout the morning rescuing dogs and cats from the property.
The Atlanta Humane Society and Bulloch County Animal Shelter are assisting with medical evaluations of the rescued animals.
Deputies have told WTOC the animals show clear signs of abuse and injuries.

Investigators also discovered one deceased dog inside the home.
“Some animals that appear to have been physically abused and then we removed animals as well that appear to have had neglect in regards to lack of food and water,” said Capt. Todd Hutchens with the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office. “This is an ongoing situation and we will probably be here on scene for most of the day.”

The investigation remains active as authorities continue processing the scene and caring for the rescued animals.
In a statement on social media, the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office says there is no threat to the public.
