Oglethorpe Mall surveillance video sheds light on confrontation that led to shooting

by Madalyn Bierster, WTOC Staff

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - An armed robbery is what one of the lawyers for a mall shooting suspect says was the real catalyst to the shootout on July 2nd at Oglethorpe Mall in Savannah.

Now we’re breaking down the video of that shooting from inside the mall.

We sat down exclusively with a local attorney for one of the suspects, as they went through this surveillance video, moment by moment, identifying who is who-- and what started the chain reaction of this shooting.

What appears to be a chain snatching, the attorney says, was the catalyst that led to gunfire. He says it was not in retaliation for a murder or gang retaliation.

So far, 6 people have been arrested for their roles in the Oglethorpe Mall shooting this month.

Those men are Jonathan Jones, Aujawon Hymon, Dahmil Johnson, Theron Robbins, Royce Hayes, and Franklin James.

James was the last of the announced suspects by SPD so far to be arrested. He turned himself in on July 31st, the day after he was supposed to have a preliminary hearing- that was instead continued by the Judge.

The next time all six suspects are due in court again is on August 27th.

We’ll be there to bring you the very latest.
