ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man surrendered after allegedly shooting an officer and barricading himself inside a Sandy Springs home on Tuesday, according to the city’s police department.
The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Herbert Mesa, was shot by officers who returned fire, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
The GBI said the Sandy Springs Police Department has asked it to investigate the incident, which is protocol for shootings involving officers.
Sandy Springs police said they were called to a home in the area of Carroll Manor Drive and North River Parkway at around 11:10 a.m. for reports of gunfire.
According to the GBI, officers were responding to a report that Mesa fired shots inside the home after friends arrived to conduct a welfare check.
Several officers approached the home using a ballistic shield for protection, the GBI said.
Mesa allegedly opened fire on the officers when they entered the home, “hitting and causing a non-life-threatening injury to one officer,” the agency said.
According to Sandy Springs police, the officer was grazed in the thumb.
The GBI said other officers returned fire as they retreated, hitting Mesa. Police then called in the SWAT team.
Around 2 p.m., Sandy Springs police confirmed that Mesa had surrendered and was in custody.
The injured officer, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital, treated and released, according to the GBI.
Mesa was also taken to an area hospital for treatment “and is in stable condition,” the agency said.
