New details: 82-year-old accused of shooting, killing her husband appears in court
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTOC) - New details are emerging in the case of Harriet Kay Recker, the 82-year-old woman accused of shooting and killing her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, at a Hilton Head Island care facility.
Deputies now believe the deadly shooting, which occurred on September 12, 2025, was premeditated.
This conclusion is based on the discovery of notes, financial documents, and the interviews of witnesses and family members.
According to court proceedings, Dennis Recker had been admitted to the Preston Health Center, a skilled-care facility on Birdsong Way, the day before the shooting due to medical issues requiring extra care.
On the morning of the incident, a neighbor who had driven Harriet to the facility was showing the couple to their room when they noticed an extra chair was needed.
The staffer left the room to retrieve a chair and, while away, heard a loud noise.
Rushing back, the neighbor found Harriet Recker holding a revolver and Dennis Recker with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Family members told deputies they had never seen her with a gun before.
Despite life-saving efforts, Dennis Recker died on scene.
Before he passed away, one witness reported that Dennis Recker, seemingly surprised by the shooting, stated, “She shot me.”
During the investigation, deputies say Harriet Recker asked for an attorney but also reportedly said, “He was a good man,” and that this was a sad situation.
Deputies found a note in her purse, and an identical note was later discovered along with financial documents at her home.
A portion of the note, read by an investigator in court, stated: “To you all this has just been too much for me, I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends. We can’t have a life without someone and that someone can’t be me as I am not strong enough or smart enough to do all this.”
After hearing from the investigator, the judge found probable cause in the case, sending it to a grand jury.
Harriet Kay Recker is charged with Murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and is being held without bond at the Beaufort County Jail.
News of the arrest had previously shocked many, including Ted Dwemoh, a Beaufort County resident who provided pest control services for the Recker’s Sun City home.
Dwemoh described Harriet as “always loving” and “the nicest person in Sun City,” recalling her kindness and willingness to help.
The investigation remains ongoing.
