New 444-room hotel could completely change Savannah riverfront
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Your view across the Savannah River will change significantly with a large new hotel going up next to the convention center.
State and local officials broke ground Wednesday.
This is a $225 million investment.
It’ll be funded by bonds recently secured in September by the Savannah Georgia Convention Center Authority.
State and local officials say they hope to get a huge return on that investment by providing hundreds of jobs up until the hotel is completed- and long after.
While they broke ground Wednesday, work has been happening for a while.
The Signia by Hilton hotel will be located right next to the Savannah Convention Center which was recently expanded.
The General Manager of the Savannah Convention Center says there are at least a dozen clients who have been waiting for this day to secure their spot in Savannah for large-scale conventions and events.
He hopes this will be a plus for residents and tourists.
“Once it’s constructed, it’ll house 250 full time jobs. But if you come out here on any random Tuesday, you’ll see the amount of workers constructing this thing. There are hundreds and hundreds of people who will be working on this in the construction phase,” said Kelvin Moore, General Manager of the Savannah Convention Center.
“It’ll provide for both a place for both people who come to Savannah for meetings to have a place to stay right next to their convention center. But equally important, people who live in Savannah, there will be five dining concepts in this hotel. Two of them, I know my wife and I are going to come to on a regular basis.”
He expects for this project to be completed on time in the summer of 2028.
