National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force hosted students, history enthusiasts for immersive Bombardier School program

POOLER, Ga. (WTOC) - People are going back in time to World War II through an immersive Bombardier School program to learn about how the bombers mapped, tracked, and dropped bombs with their technologies.

They learned how to plot real flight paths, utilizing geometry, geography, mathematics, engineering, and more that WWII bombers would need to know on their missions decades ago.

Norden Bombsight expert Dr. Tim Moore has been leading the course for about 10 years now at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force.

He said he’s self-taught. Finding the equipment, restoring it, and educating people in our region about it.

“There was that ‘Greatest Generation’ which the museum was built to help venerate, and we honor those people and what they did with their stories, which we’ve preserved, and honor how they did it.”

There were challenges in the skies, dealing with different technologies, that students will learn about through this STEM program.

They’ll also learn more about the environmental issues World War II soldiers had to endure.

Moore’s dad served in World War II, and every generation since gets further away from knowing about what really happened, so lessons like this are vital.

“It’s really great to bring people back into this, to immerse them in this historical aspect, to actually see what it was like.”

There are expansions and renovations underway through next year that will include new exhibits, classrooms, and an event center.

“Attendees will plot real flight paths using dead reckoning and operate an authentic Norden Bombsight, one of the most important technological innovations of the air war,” the museum wrote in a press release.
