Mother and daughter killed in overnight fire at the Commons on Wilmington Island, 10 others displaced

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - UPDATE Sunday 9:15 p.m.: The Chatham County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of a mother and daughter in an overnight house fire on North Cromwell Road on Wilmington Island. 

Paula O’Brien,73, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Karoline Motley, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sunday we’re learning that two people died following a fire at a nearby complex.

Chatham County Fire and Rescue, along with Chatham County Police, had multiple units respond to an apartment fire at the Commons on Wilmington Island Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

Fire crews responded at 12:18 am on Sunday morning, CCFD was dispatched to the 400 block of N. Cromwell Rd. for a structure fire.

District Chief 301, Battalion Chief 301, Engine 304, Engine 310, Engine 314, Squad 308, Truck 308, and Safety 301 all responded.

CCPD and Chatham Co. Fire respond to fire at the Commons Apartments on Wilmington Island

Arriving units encountered a fully involved, working fire to a multi-dwelling unit with possible entrapment. Upon primary search, firefighters located a person and two pets. All three were successfully removed from the structure, according to fire officials.

That person was transported by EMS to Memorial Hospital, where they later died from their injuries.

Officials say pnce the fire was under control, a second victim was found inside the building.

The Red Cross has been notified, 10 people have been displaced due to the extent of the fire.

The Georgia Office of Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner has been notified to assist with recovery and investigation efforts.
