SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Voters in Georgia’s 164th State House District will decide next month who will represent them.

Stephanie Burgess will represent the Democratic party on November’s ticket.

“When I thought about what we’re facing right now in the state and even in the nation, I’m like, why not me?” Burgess said.

Burgess works as an attorney and said her law experience would be helpful when it comes to public safety policy. She said when looking at current public safety issues, like Flock cameras, she thinks voters are looking at them as larger transparency issues.

“I can say that transparency and accountability may not be listed on the ballot, but that’s what’s on the ballot this year,” Burgess said.

Data center transparency

Burgess said one of her main focuses would be bringing transparency to development, specifically data centers.

“If I’m elected, the voters of 164 would have voted me in. And so I would need to promote what their issues are. And if they don’t want a data center, then I’m not voting for a data center,” Burgess said.

Balancing growth and cost of living

Burgess said balancing development with quality of life and rising costs of living is another priority.

“Growth should not harm the people. It should help the people,” Burgess said.

If elected, Burgess would be the first Democrat to represent the district in the 29 years Republican Ron Stephens has held it.

“We have big issues. I’m a big fighter, and we need big change,” Burgess said.

Early voting is underway. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
