Man accused of planning to shoot up Atlanta airport pleads not guilty to federal charges

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The man accused of threatening to shoot up Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport pleaded not guilty to federal charges Friday.

Billy Cagle faces federal charges of attempted violence at an international airport, interstate communications containing threats to injure the person or another, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

In Georgia, Cagle is charged with terroristic threats, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Those charges remain pending.

Federal prosecutors claim Cagle planned to carry out a shooting on Oct. 20 at the world’s busiest airport.

The 49-year-old was detained at the airport and an assault rifle was found in his truck, which was parked outside.

Defense attorneys are claiming Cagle was experiencing a mental health episode.
