Labor day weekend and travel traffic

by Lindsey Stenger

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The labor day travel holiday officially comes to an end Tuesday morning but some travel plans extend to Wednesday.

That’s why law enforcement continues to remind drivers to wear seat belts, no speeding, and avoid distracted driving.

Earl Gee and his wife are just one of the millions of people traveling down 1-95 this labor day weekend.

“We are coming from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,” said Gee.

In hopes to escape the first feel of fall, the two are heading to Florida in ole, faithful, their Dodge Charger.

“You like road tripping? We do! That’s why we didn’t fly.”

Gee says they have been on the road since Sunday and they have seen their fair share of crazy drivers.

“You gotta stay on your toes, because the people are swerving, they are going fast, going slow, but I take it easy,” said Gee. “I’m in no hurry, I will make it when I make it.”

Georgia Department of Public Safety released Labor Day weekend citation numbers Monday evening, troopers responded to 371 DUI arrests, 580 distracted driving, and 868 seat belt citations.

“Check this out, one night two night, snacks, sodas,” said Gee.

With the essentials all stored, and the GPS on course, the two head down the road, driving into the sunset of the unofficial send off of summer.
