Inmate dies after assault at Lee Correctional, officials say

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (WIS) - An inmate at a South Carolina prison was killed after an assault, according to officials.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections said 37-year-old Mario Leven Harrison died at a hospital on Monday. The agency said Harrison was reportedly assaulted in a common area of his living unit at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville.

An autopsy has been scheduled.

No further details about the incident, including whether anyone is being charged in Harrison’s death, were immediately available. SCDC did note that it is investigating the incident as a “suspected homicide.”

The SCDC Inspector General’s office is investigating alongside the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Lee County Coroner’s Office.
