Help fight hunger: Leave donations by your mailbox as Coastal Georgia joins Stamp Out Hunger drive Saturday

by Shakuria Smith

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Residents across Coastal Georgia are being asked to help fight hunger this weekend by taking part in a nationwide food drive.

Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia is partnering with the National Association of Letter Carriers for the 34th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, set for Saturday, May 9.

The effort, which began in 1993, has collected nearly 2 billion pounds of food nationwide and is considered the largest single-day food drive in the country.

Organizers say participation is simple. Residents can place a bag of nonperishable food items by their mailbox before mail delivery, and letter carriers will collect donations along their routes for distribution across the region.

Officials say the need is especially critical as summer approaches, when many children lose access to school meals. More than 47 million Americans face food insecurity, and local food banks rely on community support to meet demand.

Second Harvest leaders say donations will stay local, helping families across its 21-county service area. The organization is also preparing to launch its summer feeding program, which will provide meals at dozens of locations starting in June.

Residents looking to participate can make a difference by simply leaving a bag of food by their mailbox on Saturday.
