Headstone at historic Savannah cemetery repaired after repeated damage
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Savannah woman is breathing a sigh of relief after her mother’s headstone was finally repaired following multiple incidents of damage at Greenwich Cemetery, which is part of Bonaventure Cemetery.
Earlier this week, Felicia Shellman, reached out to WTOC about the ongoing issues with her mother’s gravesite. According to Shellman, the headstone had been damaged three times: once in 2022, again in 2024, and most recently just a few days ago.
While the cemetery made repairs after each incident, Shellman said staff told her the damage wasn’t their responsibility. She also said she contacted the city multiple times but never received a response.
On Wednesday, Shellman met with the cemetery’s maintenance supervisor, Jack Hobby, who apologized and assured her the matter would now be properly addressed.
Hobby told WTOC that her earlier complaints never reached him, citing human error.
“He explained to me that it didn’t go through the correct chain of command—as far as him being the superintendent,” Shellman said. “It fell through the cracks, and I understand—people are human.”
Hobby explained that when damage is reported, he conducts an investigation. If the cause cannot be determined, the case is referred to the City’s Risk Management Department for further review.
WTOC was present as a cemetery worker replaced the vase that had fallen off Shellman’s mother’s headstone.
Shellman says she’s thankful the issue is finally resolved—and that her mother is receiving the respect she deserves.
“Mom has justice. Bonaventure Cemetery—they gave me justice in less than 24 hours, I would say,” she said. “So yes, she can rest now.”
