Government shutdown could impact Savannah’s Veterans Day parade

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The government shutdown may alter this year’s Veterans Day parade in Savannah.

WTOC spoke with the chairman and organizer of the Savannah Veterans Day parade and they told us that they don’t plan on shutting anything down, but say the government shutdown will change their lineup for the parade.

Active military bands have always been an important part of the parade, but this year we could see a parade without any active military members.

It all depends on whether the government reopens by the 7th of November, the Friday before the parade. This takes away groups like Fort Stewart’s band which leads the parade, or even active members on the parade’s review stand, which have been a part of the festivities since its inception.

“They [Fort Stewart’s bands] have partnered with us every year that we’ve had it, this is number 79, they’ve supported us every year in every way possible. Everything is kind of in limbo right now just because there’s no funding. The government is shut down so there’s no money. Right now it’s difficult for them, they want to support but they just can’t,” said Joe Higgins, Chairman of Chatham County Veterans Council Officers.

We also spoke with the man in charge of organizing parade bands, and he said that if active soldiers aren’t included, there will be a backup plan that involves moving other bands around if needed.

The parade will happen, but the question remains about the government shutdown and whether active military members can participate.
