by Julian Agnew

BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - A man is dead after Brantley County deputies shot him Thursday evening during an attempted arrest, according to the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 5:45 p.m. to a call for service involving an individual with outstanding warrants. When deputies tried to make an arrest, the suspect fled in a vehicle. A pursuit followed, ending in a physical altercation.

During the confrontation, the suspect produced a firearm. Deputies opened fire, striking the individual. The suspect later died from his injuries. His identity has not been released.

No deputies were injured.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation at the request of Sheriff Len Davis. All deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave — a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

“Any time an incident like this occurs, it is tragic for everyone involved,” Sheriff Davis said. “Our deputies were faced with a rapidly evolving and dangerous situation. We ask the community to keep everyone affected by this incident in their thoughts and prayers as the investigation moves forward.”

The GBI will provide all future updates on the case. Anyone seeking information on the investigation can contact the GBI Region 14 Kingsland Field Office at (912) 729-6198.
