VIDALIA, Ga. (WTOC) - A family and community are asking for answers from the Vidalia Police Department after an officer shot a suspect during a traffic stop.

It is still unclear what exactly happened that led to a suspect being shot by two Vidalia police officers in the Vidalia community on Sunday.

Vidalia Police say a traffic stop at MLK Boulevard and Epstein Street turned violent Sunday around 1:30 p.m. when two officers stopped 47-year-old Travis Kelly Parrish.

Outstanding warrant led to arrest attempt

Investigators say Parrish had an outstanding warrant. A press release from Vidalia Police says during the arrest, an officer used his taser then shot Parrish.

No details have been released on why the arrest escalated.

Parrish is currently in critical condition at Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound.

Investigation continues

WTOC requested an incident report from the Vidalia Police Department to get more answers on what happened between Parrish and the officers. They say the report is not ready yet.

However, a family member of Parrish says he is awake and speaking in the trauma unit.

The investigation is ongoing with the GBI.
