Families to walk against drunk driving in Savannah this weekend

by Jude Binkley

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Families and advocates will gather Saturday in Savannah to take a stand against drunk driving.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving - or MADD - is hosting “Move with MADD” Saturday at Daffin Park. This is the first year the event is coming to Savannah after previously being hosted on Tybee Island.

The walk raises awareness about the dangers of drunk driving while honoring its victims.

“There are 159 counties in the state. [Chatham County has] risen to the top five in terms of impaired driving crashes that are deadly crashes,” Lisa Sampson, MADD Georgia program manager said. “It’s horrible here and it’s just getting worse.”

Event details and community support

The walk doubles as a fundraiser for MADD, with proceeds supporting programs that help victims of drunk driving.

“The walk this weekend is to raise awareness about the danger of drinking and driving or driving under any type of impairment, and it also gives us a chance to honor our victims and loved ones that we’ve lost,” Sampson said.

Local law enforcement will participate in the event. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and Savannah Police Department will attend. The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will also make an appearance.

The walk takes place Saturday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. at Daffin Park. You can register for the walk online here.
