Davenport House Museum hosts free Family Day focused on historic preservation
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Davenport House Museum is inviting families to step into the world of historic preservation during a special free event this weekend.
The museum, operated by Historic Savannah Foundation, will host its Family Day: Historic Preservation on Sunday, May 3, in honor of National Preservation Month.
The Davenport House, originally built in 1820 by master carpenter Isaiah Davenport, is one of Savannah’s most recognized historic homes. It was saved from demolition in 1955 by a group of local women — an effort that led to the founding of Historic Savannah Foundation and helped spark the city’s modern preservation movement.

Visitors of all ages can explore how historic buildings are restored and maintained through hands-on activities, learning traditional techniques and trying preservation skills while getting a behind-the-scenes look at how Savannah’s historic structures are protected.
Event highlights include window glazing, plaster shaping and historic brick-making demonstrations, along with complimentary treats from Bryd’s Famous Cookies and Coca-Cola refreshments.
Organizers say the event is designed to make preservation accessible and engaging, giving the community a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and care that goes into maintaining historic spaces.
Family Day events at the Davenport House are supported by the City of Savannah.
