Cigna and Memorial Health: What Savannah patients need to know

by Julian Agnew

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Cigna and Memorial Health are locked in a contract dispute that could affect thousands of patients in the Savannah area.

The two sides have been negotiating for several months. So far, they have not reached an agreement on in-network rates.

If a deal isn’t reached, Cigna members could lose in-network access to Memorial Health — meaning higher out-of-pocket costs or the need to find a new provider.

What Memorial Health Says

Memorial Health says patient care has not been disrupted — yet:

“As of now, there have been no disruptions to patient care. We regularly negotiate with insurance companies to determine agreed in-network rates. We have been negotiating with Cigna Georgia for several months and, as of today, we have not yet reached an agreement. We are committed to reaching a fair and equitable agreement, so Cigna Georgia plan members may continue to enjoy the quality care and convenient access they expect at our hospital.”

What Cigna Says

Cigna says it has already started notifying customers to give them time to prepare:

“Our focus is on working toward an agreement that keeps cost growth manageable while preserving access to care for the local community. While negotiations are ongoing, customer notices have been sent to ensure people have time to plan and understand their options, even as discussions continue. Any agreement must strike an appropriate balance between continued access to care and competitive pricing for employers and the Savannah community.”

What This Means for You

If you are a Cigna member who receives care at Memorial Health, here’s what you should do now:

  • Check your mail and email — Cigna says it has sent notices to affected customers.
  • Call your insurance provider — Ask about your current in-network status and what your options are if a deal isn’t reached.
  • Talk to your doctor — If you have upcoming appointments or procedures at Memorial Health, ask about your coverage before your visit.
  • Know your rights — If you are in the middle of active treatment, you may have protections under continuity of care rules. Ask your insurer for details.
