CAT offers free rides for Transit Equity Day

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Bus riders across Chatham County can ride for free Wednesday as Chatham Area Transit Authority honors civil rights icon Rosa Parks on Transit Equity Day.

Zero-fare service will be available on fixed routes and CAT Mobility paratransit vehicles as the agency recognizes Parks’ courage and legacy. The observance highlights the importance of public transportation in connecting residents to jobs, education, healthcare, and opportunity.

To commemorate Parks, CAT will dedicate a seat on every bus and paratransit vehicle in her memory.

“Public transportation is more than getting from point A to point B, it is a lifeline that connects people to opportunity,” said CAT Board Chair Deitric Leggett.

Interim Executive Director and CEO Stephanie Cutter said the fare-free day honors Parks’ legacy while reinforcing the need for equitable and inclusive transit systems.

Feb. 4 marks the anniversary of Parks’ 1955 stand in Montgomery, Alabama, a defining moment that helped ignite the civil rights movement. Officials encourage residents to take advantage of the free service and reflect on the ongoing importance of transit equity.
