Body found burned beyond recognition in Albany

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Authorities are investigating after a body was found burned beyond recognition in Albany.

The discovery was made in the 2800 block of Rosebrier Avenue, according to officials. Investigators say the condition of the remains makes it impossible at this point to determine the person’s sex or identity.

Right now, it’s unclear whether the body was found near a homeless camp. The body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Crime Lab for identification and to determine the cause and manner of death.

Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler says the case is being treated as suspicious until investigators can rule otherwise. “Well, great possibly we have to rule every case as a homicide and then rule things out. We have to finish an investigation. Right now it is suspicious,” Fowler said.

Details remain limited as the investigation continues.
