Beaufort-Jasper EOC feeling shutdown impacts; Head Start program not impacted so far
BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - As the government shutdown continues across the country, organizations that use federal funds are trying to find ways to still serve the people who need them.
One of those groups is the Beaufort-Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission.
WTOC spoke with their executive director about the impact they have seen and how they are still finding ways to help families.
Beaufort-Jasper EOC helps about 1,600 families a month.
They offer services such as emergency assistance to help pay rent and utility bills, housing support, and job training, and they also oversee the Early Head Start program.
Even with the shutdown ongoing, they continue to serve 500 families.
“Ensuring that those children can enter public school on task is a huge thing in itself,” Executive Director for Beaufort-Jasper EOC, James Williams said.
Many Head Start programs across the country have been forced to close their doors due to the shutdown, but not the program that serves Beaufort and Jasper counties.
The federally funded organization has seen a minimal impact on its Head Start program so far from the shutdown, but they are feeling it elsewhere.
They have seen a spike in the number of people showing up at their door.
“They may need some services they have never needed before,” Williams said.
Even with the boost in clients, Beaufort County EOC is still trying to serve them by dipping into its excess fund and reallocating money to other areas, but that money dwindles by the day.
“We’re working hard not only to keep our same baseline of services but to be creative and do anything that we can to help those families find the resources they need within the community,” Williams said. “We are trying to direct them in the right direction.”
Another problem the non-profit is running into is staffing.
“People are reluctant to start work because they may feel that their job may be impacted any day.”
If you are interested in helping, Williams says they are always looking for volunteers and donations.
You can apply to be a volunteer or look at those opportunities on their website.
