Atlanta state lawmaker launches historic bid for Georgia attorney general

by Tim Darnell

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - State Rep. Tanya Miller is hoping to become the first Black female attorney general in Georgia history - not to mention the first woman of color ever elected to any statewide constitutional office in the Peach State.

On Monday, Miller, a Democrat who has represented Atlanta’s 62nd district in the state House since 2023, launched her bid to become Georgia’s 56th attorney general.

“I’m not the politician’s lawyer, not the governor’s lawyer, not the president’s lawyer,” Miller said. “I will remain unbought and unbossed by corporate interest groups.”

Miller said her campaign will focus on cracking down on human trafficking, fraud, predatory lending and corporate price gouging, particularly in the aftermath of natural disasters like Hurricane Helene.

Macon attorney Daryl Morton, a lifelong Georgian, said the race is significant because many residents are unfamiliar with the role of the office.

“For too long they haven’t done anything that’s made a difference,” Morton said.

Miller joins another Democrat, former state Rep. Bob Trammell; and state Sens. Brian Strickland (R-McDonough) and Bill Cowsert (R-Athens) as candidates hoping to succeed current Attorney General Chris Carr, who is running for governor.

Miller is the second Democrat to enter the race, joining former state Rep. Bob Trammel, who launched his campaign last month. Trammel welcomed the news in a statement, calling Miller’s entry “a sign of a vibrant party and people wanting fundamental change.”

Miller is a former prosecutor, civil rights attorney, and current chair of the Georgia House Democratic Caucus. She would become Georgia’s second African American to hold the office.

Thurbert Baker was appointed to the position in 1997 by then-Gov. Zell Miller and served until January 10, 2011.

Miller has been an assistant U.S. attorney in New York and a Fulton County prosecutor handling homicides and crimes against women and children. She currently serves as general counsel to the Georgia Federation of Public Service Employees.

Miller is the founder of Miller Injury Trial Law.

“The Democratic primary for attorney general will turn into a squabble over who will most obstruct President Trump’s conservative agenda that Georgians voted for. I welcome a competitive primary because it will highlight for voters the importance of keeping the Georgia attorney general’s office in the hands of a law-and-order Republican,” Strickland said in a statement on Monday.

Lt. Gov. Burt Jones is also running for governor. Current Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is term-limited.

Georgia’s nationally watched 2026 midterm elections include open races for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general.
