88 affordable homes completed in Savannah’s Cuyler-Brownsville neighborhood

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Decades of history meet fresh opportunity in the Cuyler-Brownsville Historic District, where community leaders celebrated the completion of 88 new and renovated affordable homes Wednesday.

A rededication ceremony was held Wednesday morning on Florance Street to mark the milestone for the refreshed Heritage Place Apartments.

The project represents a joint effort between Mercy Housing Southeast, U.S. Bank and the Cuyler-Brownville Neighborhood Association. Community leaders said the development protects affordable housing options, allowing longtime residents of all income levels to stay in the district.

“I enjoy staying here. It’s a nice community, everybody gets along, everybody helps out each other if they need it,” resident June Batiste said during the event. “Right now, I love it.”

Along with expanding housing options, the development repurposes and revitalizes two landmark sites within the historically Black neighborhood: the historic Florance Street School and Charity Hospital.
