TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - Saturday, the mayor of Tybee Island said they may need to close parts of Highway 80.

“We may need to close Hwy 80 between the Bull River Bridge and the Lazaretto Creek Bridge between 7:00 pm and 11:00 pm, with the chances of closure greater around 9:00 pm,” wrote Mayor West.

The mayor said the Fort Pulaski Tidal Gauge is forecast to reach 9.9 feet during high tide Saturday night at 9:10 p.m.

“Saltwater inundation may be possible one to two hours before and after high tide. Any amount over 9.8’ may result in water on the fog line of Highway 80,” wrote Mayor West.

In his social media post, Mayor Brian West said, “The chances of closure are minimal.”

Tybee Island Fire Rescue advised drivers to avoid traveling on Highway 80 past Lazaretto Creek Saturday evening.

The City of Tybee Island gave a weather update and reminded residents and visitors to, "NEVER DRIVE THRU STANDING WATER. TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN!"
