‘Get ready the tiger is roaring’: Savannah State prepares to celebrate homecoming
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Thousands of people from right here in Savannah and across the country will flock to Savannah State University throughout this week for homecoming festivities.
WTOC walked around campus speaking to students and campus leaders about what makes this week so special for this university.
Saturday, downtown Savannah will be shut down for the massive SSU homecoming parade.
The number of people expected to be on campus and at the parade is upwards of 13,000 people.
University president Dr. Jermaine Whirl says this week is when the university’s impact is showcased.
“It’s going to be a great economic impact for hotels and restaurants, I’m sure they are going to be excited about that but more importantly you are going to see a lot of orange and blue,” said Dr. Whirl. “Get ready the tiger is roaring.”
But first, events around campus will honor specific alumni, traditions, and programs.
One of those honored on Thursday is the 50th anniversary of WHCJ—the school radio station led by cherished staff member Grace Curry.
“Not only about the music but the its the environment,” said Curry. “We have volunteers that have been here for like over 40 years. So, we have created a family-like environment.”
Over the years every student and faculty member has learned to love different Homecoming traditions.
“Definitely going to be the tailgates during the football game,” said Genelle Miranda, SSU student.
“The game, absolutely the halftime show,” said Derrick Spencer, SSU student.
“Fridays! Fish fry Fridays,” said Curry.
“It’s going to be the game,” said Dr. Whirl. “Everything leads up to the game.”
