SAVANNAH, Ga. — After 15 years at Woodville-Tompkins Technical and Career High School, Principal Alfred McGuire is preparing to say goodbye.

Students, staff members and alumni gathered Friday for a parade and pep rally honoring McGuire, who is leaving the school to serve as executive director of college and career readiness for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

Hugs, smiles and pom-poms waving filled the halls for a principal many described as a familiar face and steady presence.

Staff members said McGuire is the kind of principal who lights up a room but never makes the moment about himself. They said he knows every student in the school by name and leads by giving to others.

Kathryn Ryan, math teacher at Woodville-Tompkins Technical and Career High School, said it is his generosity she will remember most.

“I’m gonna start crying. He’s the most genuine person I’ve ever known,” Ryan said. “I’m so lucky to have worked for him. He is honest, he is forthright, he is giving, charitable. He only thinks of others and doesn’t think of himself.”

Ask anyone at Woodville-Tompkins about a favorite memory with McGuire and the stories may be different. But the way they describe him is the same — as a leader who showed up and gave to others.

McGuire was approved for the district role during the September board meeting. In his new position, he will oversee college and career readiness efforts across the district.

Friday’s send-off marked the end of a decade and a half at the school and the start of his next chapter with the district.
