Weekly group helps new moms navigate breastfeeding, motherhood

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (WTOC) — New and expectant mothers in the Lowcountry are finding guidance and community through a weekly group at Novant Health in Hardeeville.

The “Happy Moms, Happy Babies” group meets every Tuesday and gives mothers a place to ask questions, learn breastfeeding techniques and talk about challenges that can come with having a new baby.

The group has been meeting at the hospital for more than 12 years and is led by registered nurse Wendy Yummick.

Yummick said the group focuses on more than breastfeeding. Mothers can learn about breastfeeding and bottle-feeding breast milk while also discussing some of the emotional challenges that can come with motherhood, including postpartum depression and anxiety.

Yummick said the group can help mothers recognize that they are not alone in what they are experiencing.

“I will tell you that all of those women back there do it. They do it for each other, too,” Yummick said. “They will talk about how they are feeling, and then someone will say, ‘I feel that way too.’”

For Jackie Dunford, the group became an important part of her breastfeeding experience.

“This breastfeeding group saved my life,” Dunford said. “Breastfeeding was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but the most rewarding things besides having a baby and getting pregnant.”

Dunford said the group has also allowed parents to stay connected outside of the weekly meetings, including through a group chat where mothers can continue sharing advice and encouragement.

Other mothers say the group has helped them build lasting friendships and a sense of community while adjusting to life with a new baby.

Novant Health is highlighting the group during Breastfeeding Awareness Month, when organizations across the country raise awareness about breastfeeding and resources available to mothers.

Mothers do not have to be Novant Health patients to attend “Happy Moms, Happy Babies.” The group meets every Tuesday in Hardeeville.
