Verdict split in Truman Pkwy. double homicide case
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Chatham County jury has reached a verdict in the case of Derek Johnson after 2 weeks of trial and testimony.
The jury found Johnson guilty of killing Phillip Mock, the innocent bystander who came to help.
However, the found Johnson not guilty in killing his son’s girlfriend 19-year-old Shaliyah Collins.
Here’s how the verdict breaks down:
Shaliyah Collins:
• Malice Murder: Not Guilty
• Felony Murder: Not Guilty
• Aggravated Assault: Not Guilty
• Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Count 1): Not Guilty
• Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Count 2): Not Guilty
Phillip Mock:
• Malice Murder: Guilty
• Felony Murder: Guilty
• Aggravated Assault: Guilty
• Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Count 1): Guilty
• Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Count 2): Guilty
Crimes against his ex-wife, Laila Johnson, including threats and intimidation. Johnson was found not guilty of the following against her:
• Aggravated Assault: Not Guilty
• Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony: Not Guilty
Johnson was also found guilty of Concealing the Death of Another, meaning the jury still believes Derek Johnson assisted in throwing Shaliyah’s body off the overpass.
Johnson cannot be re-charged in the death of Shaliyah Collins.
He will be sentenced to a mandatory sentence of life in prison. It is up to Judge Colbert if Johnson will be sentenced to life with the possibility of parole or life without the possibility of parole.
