U.S. 80/Ogeechee Rd. widening project moves to next step

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Drivers in Chatham County should prepare for significant delays and overnight lane closures as the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) prepares to shift traffic on a major roadway.

Starting Tuesday, September 1, Georgia DOT will begin Stage 2 of the US 80/Ogeechee Road widening project.

Weather permitting, crews will shift traffic overnight into the early morning of Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The shift will move traffic to newly constructed parallel travel lanes from Horizon Park Drive to Victory Drive.

Crews will implement temporary lane closures and flagging operations over the next two nights. Workers will be installing concrete barrier walls, asphalt tapers, and road striping. The signalized intersection at U.S. 80 and Stiles Avenue will be relocated east of its current position.

Transportation officials expect significant delays during this preparation period and are strongly encouraging motorists to use alternate routes if possible.

By Wednesday morning, the traffic shift is expected to be complete, and drivers will begin using the new travel lane alignment.

GDOT officials urge drivers to:

• Pay close attention to additional directional signs.
• Adhere strictly to the posted speed limit.
• Exercise caution in the construction zone while motorists adjust to the new traffic flow.

If inclement weather slows preparation, GDOT warns that the schedule could be postponed by 24 hours.
